Why a setup matters
You can feel the string height under your fingers and hear how well chords stay in tune up the neck.
We check the curve of the neck and adjust string height so notes feel comfortable to fret.
We check intonation so fretted notes stay closer to pitch. On guitars with adjustable pickups, we also balance their output.
We play across the neck and bend strings to listen for buzz or notes that cut out early.
Inside the complete setup
Open a step to see how we check and adjust your guitar.
We check the neck’s straightness and relief—the slight curve that gives the strings room to vibrate.

If your guitar has an adjustable truss rod, we use it to set the curve of the neck.

We check the frets for uneven spots. Our guitar technician assesses and prices any extensive fretwork separately.

We clean the fretboard and condition unfinished wood if the material and finish allow it.

We set the string height, or action, to suit the curve of the fretboard and make notes comfortable to fret.

We check pitch along the fretboard and adjust intonation where the bridge design allows.

On guitars with adjustable pickups, we set their height to help balance output across the strings.

We listen for buzz, check for dead spots and make sure bent notes ring out.

The adjustments depend on your guitar’s bridge, pickups and neck design.
